Five Rings Training takes its name from the classic Samurai text The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, commonly regarded as a manual on how to succeed in life, and the Five Elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, in which the body is seen as a microcosm of the universe and subject to the same universal laws and seasonal changes as the natural world. The Five Elements are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.Five Rings Training is based in London, but works world-wide, training individuals and groups with unique techniques which train the mind and body in unison and unblock energy to enhance advancements in performance and wellbeing.Five Rings Training was founded by world ranked martial artist Kirsty Henderson who is a Professional Coach and expert in recovery and bioenergetics training (for more info on Kirsty and her team see Team Page).Our logo uses the Zen Enso symbol (Japanese word meaning circle) which represents enlightenment, strength, the universe and the void and is an expression of the moment. Some artists will draw enso daily as a type of spiritual diary: the shape of the circle formed in a single stroke displaying balance, patience and development.Our philosophy is based on understanding the body as an energy system and training the mind and body in a manner in which personal development, mental focus, respect for others and physical training go hand in hand and the Zen disciplines of meditation, mindfulness and living in the moment.Our motto is Take Responsibility for which we focus on overcoming our limitations and fears to unleash potential and be a highly efficient version of who we were meant to be.People fail, don't act, don't take responsibility through fear. This is the reason why focusing on the way of the samurai, the way of the warrior, is central to the concept behind Five Rings.Central to martial arts and oriental healing systems is the concept of Ki (vital life force also known as Qi or prana) which runs through the body in a network of channels called Meridians. A large part of our training has been in developing our own Ki and in our workshops we pass on many of the Qi gong and Ki training exercises we have learnt which increase strength, health and vitality and train you in our unique bioenergetic training methods.

You fight and when you are damaged you give up or you get knocked out. With this style of fighting you feel as though your life is on the line and you have to have the right type of teacher in order to survive.No stone was left unturned in my training. At Five Rings, Self Defence and personal protection of you, your friends and family is not simply a series of moves taken from the latest system, which indeed all of our Instructors are highly trained in, but more than that it is a holistic approach that works with you to increase your personal awareness, your confidence, your knowledge of yourself, your body, your energy system, and your ability to detect potential threats• Prevent contact from happening• Keep clear, focused and calm if an attack does happen• Stay in control and think clearly until in a point of safetyWe know that each of us is different, in size and shape, in personality, in experience, so we work with you as an individual.We emphasise the importance of regular training to keep the mind and body strong, fit, healthy and safe. So practice often, and build your fitness and your strength as tools for you. And if you want regular training from us, or more advanced training on how to defend yourself in the street or against weapons all you have to do is ask, and we'll arrange something to suit you.The key to responsive, effective disarment and self defence tactics is regular and adrenyl training.
